Sometimes people contact the practice requesting to have their necks or backs “cracked”, their view of chiropractic informed by social media. It is important to understand that manipulative therapy is not without risk and should be applied judiciously. It should only be used after careful assessment.
We have had discussions with patients about some of the videos posted online by chiropractors, the image of chiropractic they present, and the expectations they generate. Unfortunately, we suspect the louder the crack and the more spectacular the video the more likely it is to be shared. In this respect we think the monetization of these videos is problematic. Sometimes we explain that if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Chiropractors employ a wide variety of techniques and adjustments producing an audible click are not always necessary or appropriate.
